You'll often read that Panama has two seasons; "wet" season May through mid-December and "dry" season mid-December though April. That does not mean that we have torrential tropical downpours May through mid-December. There are extended periods of transitional weather when you'll experience picturesque mornings and early afternoons before the rains start. The seasons are best described as follows:
Panama weather varies over the course of the year. Based on the typical weather patterns, the year can be broken into three seasons:
"Dry" Season: mid-December to mid-April
High season coincides with what many consider the best weather in Panama – there’s nearly 0% chance of rain for a solid four months. The lack of humidity and nearly zero-percent chance of rain create a truly idyllic paradise. Ocean breezes balance the effects of the tropical sun, allowing for energetic days and comfortable nights. While abundant sunshine is usually a vacationer’s dream, keep in mind that by February, the jungle will not look quite as lush as it does later in the year.
"Green" Season: late-April through September
Most of the days during green season will be sunny or partly cloudy, with an afternoon or evening rain that typically lasts a relatively short time. The "green" season also brings a common phenomena called the Bajareque, a light mist that creates multiple rainbows that touch the earth. Run fast and you just might encounter a pot of gold. However, it’s not uncommon to experience a full day or two of rain during this period. The likelihood of rain increases as the season progresses, with tropical rains being much more common late September to early October.
"Rainy" Season: October through mid-December
When it rains, it pours. During these months, you may experience an entire week of rain; make the most of these glorious downpours by curling up by the fireplace to read or bring out your hobbies. During "rainy" season, mornings and early afternoons are usually sunny but give way to intermittent cooling rainfalls later in the afternoon or evening. Sometime around mid-December, the rain will break and not return for months. Don’t let the rain discourage you though; October is the very best month for humpback whale sightings and sport fishing.
